Disk Space - refers to the amount of storage your account is allocated. This space is used to store html files, graphics, audio/video, e-mail messages, and any other files that are part of your website. Each of our packages has a specific disk space limit. If you need more space, simply upgrade to the next largest package.

Bandwidth (Data Transfer) - Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred to and from your website each month. This data includes html files, graphics, audio/video, e-mail messages, and any other files that are a part of your website.

Example 1: A 2 MB file uploaded and downloaded would use a total of 4 MB of data transfer.

Example 2: 100 page views of a website averaging 10 KB per page would use around 1 MB of data transfer.

Each of our packages has a specific bandwidth transfer limit. If you need more bandwidth, simply upgrade to the next largest package.

Parked Domains - A Parked Domain is an inactive domain reserved for later use or one that points to another existing domain. For example, the domain name for your hosting account is "domain.com" and you also have registered "domain.net" through your domain.com Domain Manager. You may point domain.net to the domain.com IP address. Internet users can now access your Web site using either domain name.

Subdomain - Subdomains or 3rd level domains are web addresses that operate just under a top level domain, but behave as an independent domain. You can place a word or phrase in place of the standard "www" like "subdomain"
(subdomain.domain.com) and redirect all requests for that URL to a different directory within your website. You can set up subdomains from within your control panel.

POP Email - Short for Post Office Protocol, this standard is used to receive email using popular email applications like Eudora, Outlook and Netscape Mail. The number of email accounts (johndoe@yourdomain.com) you may have is defined in your package.

Email Forwarding - Email forwarding is the ability to configure your email aliases to forward your email to another email address. This can either be for an entire domain, by forwarding the 'Catch All' email alias, or can be on a per-alias basis.

The email address you forward email for your domain to can be a mail box associated with an ISP account, or can be a Hotmail or similar free email account.

The alternative to email forwarding is delivering your email to a POP email account.

MySQL Database - MySQL is a popular Open Source Software relational database management system which uses a subset of ANSI SQL (Structured Query Language). For more information, see mysql.com.  You may have as many databases as your package and disk space allow.

FTP Account - "FTP" (File Transfer Protocal) accounts are typically used by more advanced web designers who can create their own web pages from scratch, or by using stand-alone third party software. These created pages are then transfered to our web servers using FTP services. The number of accounts you can set up is determined by your package.

Telnet/SSH - Telnet is a way of connecting to other computers. Telnet allows you to connect to another computer and then control it in a limited way by giving it commands. The window where you type commands is like a gateway through to the remote computer: your own computer acts like a terminal and plays no part in what happens. Telnet is sometimes called "terminal emulation" or "shell access".

SSH ("Secure Shell") is a lot safer than telnet. The problem with telnet is that everything you type, including your password, is sent to the other computer in the clear without encryption. This makes it possible for other people to find out your password by eavesdropping on network traffic. There are measures in place on KaelinWeb and in some other parts of the Data Center to prevent this, but ssh eliminates all possibility by encrypting whatever you type before it gets sent out of your computer. What you send is then decrypted at the other end by the host computer.

Note: This access is only granted on certain accounts, by request, with proof of identification.

Web Control Panel - The Web Control Panel which we use is CPanel.

CPanel is a fully featured web-based control panel that allows you to manage your web hosting space and domain name through a web interface.

CPanel gives you more control to access and manage your web site. You have the ability to manage all aspects of e-mail, files, FTP, CGI scripts, and web site statistics.

File Manager - The File Manager allows you to manage your site through HTML, rather than an FTP tool or other third-party application. You can upload, create or delete files, organize files in folders, and change file permissions. While not as sophisticated as most FTP tools, File Manager is free and gives you all the basic functionality necessary to manage your site

Backup Management - The Backup Management area allows you to download the daily, weekly, or monthly backup file of your entire web site, or a particular MySQL, alias, or filter backup file. If your computer crashes, or your personal backups are destroyed, these files allow you to recover your site in a convenient manner (you could also use FTP to download each file, but it would take much longer as the files are not compressed).

Apache Error Documents - Error pages are displayed to Internet users when any one of a variety of errors occur, such as when a user enters an incorrect URL or is not authorized to access a specific directory in your web site. Companies often customize error pages to brand them with a specific corporate image and a link to their home page. You do not have to customize these pages - the error page is always available, whether customized or not.

Password Protect Directories - You can protect directories within your site from browsers by using a password to protect them. This allows you to restrict material to only authorized users or store sensitive material online. This has the same appearance and effect as the password protection on CPanel.

Cron Job - Cron jobs allow you to automate repetitive tasks on the server that hosts your web site. This is a powerful tool that allows you to take a hands-free approach to repetitive tasks. For example, you could add a cron job that automatically copies a MySQL database to a separate location on your site as a backup.

Perl - Perl is a server-side scripting language which is commonly used to write CGI programs. Perl programs, or "scripts", are text files which are parsed (run through and executed) by a program called an "interpreter" on the server.

PHP - A server-side scripting language. The PHP commands, which are embedded in the web page's HTML, are executed on the web server to generate dynamic HTML pages. For more information, see php.net.

CGI-BIN - Every account comes with a personal CGI-BIN. The CGI-BIN is a directory on the server where the executable CGI scripts reside. You have complete control over your CGI-BIN and can install any custom or 3rd party CGI scripts that you would like, with certain exclusions due to the security risks they post (such as Matt's FormMail script).

Flash & Shockwave - Flash and Shockwave is multimedia technology developed by Macromedia to allow a lot of interactivity to fit in a relatively small file size.

Frontpage Support - FrontPage is a web publishing application created for non-programmers. The Microsoft FrontPage web authoring and management tool gives you everything you need to get your web site up and running fast. KaelinWeb supports the use of FrontPage 2003, 2002, 2000, 98 and 97. Note: FrontPage 2003 support excludes SharePoint Services, available only on Windows Servers.

SSI - (abbreviation for "Server-Side Includes") is a server-side scripting language. SSI scripting commands are embedded within a webpage and are parsed and executed on the web server to generate dynamic HTML pages. Common uses of SSI are to include files (e.g. a header or footer file) that are used on multiple pages, or to show the current date and time.

PhpMyAdmin - a tool written in PHP intended to handle the administration of MySQL over the web. It can create/drop/alter tables, delete/edit/add fields, execute any SQL statement, manage keys on fields, and more.
